Ingredients
- • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- • 1 cup cold butter, cubed
- • 1/4 cup ice water
- • 1 tablespoon sugar (for crust)
- • 1 teaspoon salt (for crust)
- • 6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
- • 3/4 cup sugar
- • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces
- • 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (egg wash)
Instructions
- Step 1: Make the crust: pulse flour, sugar, and salt in a food processor. Add cold butter cubes and pulse until pea-sized crumbs form. Add ice water and pulse until dough comes together. Divide in half, flatten into discs, and refrigerate 1 hour.
- Step 2: Preheat oven to 425°F. Toss sliced apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
- Step 3: Roll out one disc of dough and fit into a 9-inch pie plate. Fill with the apple mixture. Dot with butter pieces.
- Step 4: Roll out the second disc and place over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges. Cut 4-5 slits in the top for steam.
- Step 5: Brush top with egg wash and sprinkle with a little sugar.
- Step 6: Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes, then reduce to 350°F and bake for 35-40 more minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Step 7: Cool on a wire rack for at least 1 hour before slicing. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
