Ingredients

  • • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • • 1 teaspoon salt
  • • 2 eggs
  • • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • • 1 cup buttermilk
  • • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • • 16 oz cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
  • • 1/2 cup butter, softened (for frosting)
  • • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • • 1 teaspoon vanilla (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Step 2: Whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. Step 3: In another bowl, combine eggs, oil, buttermilk, red food coloring, vanilla, and vinegar.
  4. Step 4: Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Step 5: Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 28-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Step 6: Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Step 7: Make frosting: beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until fluffy.
  8. Step 8: Frost the first layer, stack the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides generously. Decorate with cake crumbs on the sides.
